Drywall Repair: From Nail Holes to Big Patches

Drywall damage is one of the most common things we get called for, and one of the most satisfying to fix, because a good patch disappears completely. Here's what's actually involved, from the tiniest ding to the kind of job worth handing off.

Nail holes and dings

The five-minute category. A little lightweight spackle, smoothed flush with a putty knife, left to dry, lightly sanded, and painted. Most homeowners can knock these out in an afternoon. The only trick is a light touch on the sanding and matching the paint sheen.

Small holes

Think doorknob-sized, up to a few inches. These need a backing so the compound has something to hold: a self-adhesive mesh patch or a small drywall plug. Then it's two or three thin coats of joint compound, each feathered wider than the last, sanded smooth between coats. The mistake people make is one thick coat, which cracks and telegraphs through the paint.

Big holes and damaged sections

Once you're past hand-sized, or dealing with water damage, a failed seam, or a section that's crumbling, it becomes a real patch: cut back to clean drywall, often to the studs, fit a new piece, tape the joints, and finish. This is where an invisible result takes experience, especially blending into a textured wall or matching a ceiling.

The part people underestimate: finishing

Anyone can fill a hole. Making it vanish is about the finishing, feathering the compound wide, sanding flat, and matching texture and paint so your eye never catches the spot. That's the difference between "patched" and "you'd never know."

When to call
